"Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac" by Gabrielle Zevin

I think I have a pattern.
I start interesting books either on Sundays, or at the end of any holiday, and I go to bed too late, because goddammit, interesting plots! Not that I ever regret reading, even when it eats from my precious sleep.
Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac is like that one person you chat with till the sunrise, and you can feel your eyes burning already, but no, you'll stay awake for them. That's a little what I did with this book to finish it - I skipped my usual Friday nap (I mean my three-or-four-hours-long "nap") and devoured Gabrielle Zevin's masterpiece in one sitting, after having read only a hundred pages in the course of one week.

Above all, mine is a love story.
And like most love stories, this one involves chance, gravity, and a dash of head trauma.
It began with a coin toss.
The coin came up tails; I was heads.

Naomi Porter wakes up in a hospital bed and realizes she has no idea who she is, or what has happened during the last four years. No memory occurs of her parents' divorce, her boyfriend (does she have one at all?), her friends at school, French (which she used to be so fluent at). Diagnosis: amnesia. The one to help her remember her life is her best friend, Will, who does it the old-fashioned way - with a letter, written on an old typewriter. That's just who Will is - old-fashioned, but always willing to help.
Naomi is perplexed. All the activities she was passionate about before the accident, now seem... ordinary to her. And she doesn't know what connected her with her friends in the first place. Only after going back to school and trying to get her memory back, does she realize the past can sometimes be too overwhelming, and her head trauma might be a chance for a new life.

I was going to be all about now, about am, about present tense.

I prefer reading books in one sitting, or if not one - just reading them quickly in general. I like the slight headache I get after staring at the pages for several hours straight, and I like the occasional blurriness of my sight when, ahem, someone's cutting onions again! That was the only reason why I preferred to devour Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac. I could truly connect with the characters and the plot itself. I didn't always agree with Naomi's actions, as they could be unreasonable at times, but, for me, she is one of the best YA heroines I've read about. She wasn't the typical one-dimensional character, which is something I always look for in good books - Naomi was flawed, she showed emotions and atitude; she built a new friendship, got her heart broken several times, disappointed people and then managed to give them reasons to forgive her.
Although the writing style could've been more complex, indeed. I'm fine with it the way it is - beautiful and flowing, yet simple. It didn't worsen the book; it even added for a better experience in some way.

I've been reading a lot of contemporary YA fiction lately, and I find myself again and again in every book. 15 and 16 are the perfect ages, I guess. So, if you are as confused and emotional as me, and are looking for answers to questions bigger than you, pick up Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac. It may not answer the questions you have, but books always make things easier to bear, I promise.

Rapunzel, let down your fair hair!" - "Cress", Marissa Meyer

English follows.

When she was just a child, the witch locked her
away in a tower that had neither doors nor stairs.

Welcome to one of the many satellites, orbiting the Earth. But this particular satellite is Cress' prison and the only home she has ever known. Queen Levana's closest thraumatuge keeps her locked in order to get as much information about Cinder, Scarlet, Thorne, and Wolf as possible. Instead of that, she secretly helps them without their knowledge, and never gives a thing away.
But this isn't Rapunzel as we know her. In fact, the only thing both of these fictional characters have in common is their long fair hair and being kept in a tower (I mean, if by 'tower' you understand a satellite thousands of meters above the Earth's atmosphere...) Not only is Cress an amazing hacker, but she is the best hacker on Luna. Her only company is the computer version of her 10-year-old self. Despite her unique talent, she wasn't destined to live a happy, fortunate life.
Meanwhile, on the board of Rampion Cinder and company are trying to find a way to stop the wedding between Emperor Kaito and Queen Levana. Cinder remembers a girl who tried to call her through the portscreen hidden in Kaito's android, Nainsi. Reaching Cress will be difficult, but the entire crew needs her help to succeed in their difficult mission.

Mrs. Meyer won my heart with her debut novel. Scarlet totally blew me away and left me curled in a fetal position in my bed, crying my eyes out.
Cress, my friend, was different.
I got angry. I mentally threw the book against the wall because, tell me, how can someone be so dumb?! These dumb decisions eventually lead to unexpected plot twists that made me stay awake for another, ehm, hour, when I was supposed to sleep because I'm still a student and I need a lot of sleep. Eh, I read past my bedtime, blame me, Mom. Yes, I did read two more chapters although I'd promised you that was my last one. Fight me.
My favorite characters have grown up a lot since I last read Scarlet more than four months ago. Back then, they were rather one-dimensional, while now... Now we have true revolutioners, brave, smart, and fucking kick-ass. Even the new character changed from a pretty naive and fragile girl, to a strong woman ready to destroy Luna. Her metamorphosis was pleasure to observe.

So far, this is definitely my favorite TLC installment. It has absolutely everything - from beautiful descriptions, to love scenes in the middle of epic, action-packed battles (they are cute when needed! Dont'judge me.)
I can't wait to finally pick up Winter. I've already set up my expectations pretty high. I mean, it's a solid 800-page monster, there's a ton of things that need to happen!

"Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" by Benjamin Alire Saénz

I haven't read that many books as a lot of people like to think. But I've read enough to know that, sometimes, this very weird combination of ink, paper, all of the 26 letters of the English alphabet, and the different punctuation marks can entirely fuck you up, break your heart, scatter your brain, make you weep like a gigantic baby. You still love them, though - after all, if a book has affected you this way, it's impossible for it not to stay with you till the end of your life.

I opened the PDF file on my phone out of complete boredom. Read the first sentence. Then read the second one.
"It's Sunday, you need to go to bed early."
"But Moooooom, can't you see I'm reading!"
My mother gave up on me eventually. You simply don't make a bookworm put their book down. Especially when the book has completely absorbed them to the point of forgetting the surrounding world.

"Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" is the story of two Mexican American boys and their beautiful, strong friendship.
Aristotle Mendoza is a quiet 15-year-old guy who has decided to shrink inside himself. He has no friends, everything bores him to death, he is miserable. On one hot summer day, Ari decides to go to the swimming pool, although he can't swim. Who knew the boy who was going to change his life, was going to be there to teach him how to swim.
Ah, Dante - the smart, caring, Dante, Dante who loved poetry, Dante with his great sketches. Dante, Dante, Dante.

As Dante was watching me search the sky through the lens of a telescope, he whispered, “Someday,
I’m going to discover all the secrets of the universe.”
That made me smile. “What are you going to do with all those secrets, Dante?”
“I’ll know what to do with them,” he said. “Maybe change the world.”
I believed him.

Have you ever met someone with whom you just have this natural click; conversations never feel forced, silence is never awkward, and you think you're basically soulmates? Ari and Dante are like that.
Have you ever read a book where you associate with the main character so much, you can predict their future actions and their thougths? Because, swear to God, I am so Ari. And thanks to him, I got to know myself better.

There is something so comforting about this book.
Maybe it's the writing style - there is so much beauty in the short sentences, in the dialogues and the sometimes repetitive lines; Benjamin Alire Saénz made me feel at home all the time - which, to that day, only J. R. R. Tolkien and Ray Bradbury had succeeded at.
Maybe it's the realistic characters. I'm still not over the fact that I will never see any of them. Goddammit, fictional literature.
Maybe it's the plot - or the lack of it, depending on how you look at it. The book is kind of like a journal, and a very messy one, exactly like the mind of a teenager.

Do I recommend this book? Absolutely. Just not to everyone.
Do not read Ari and Dante's story. Unless, of course, you're willing to turn reading into a sob fest, and have a ton of highlighters next to you, because almost every single line is worth highlighting.
Most importantly, do not read Ari and Dante's story unless you're ready to open your mind heart for those two boys, as they did for each other.

The extraordinary love of two misfits: "Eleanor and Park", Rainbow Rowell

[English follows]

Park Sheridan does everything he can to avoid attention. He is the quiet Asian boy who is into punk, rock, and comic books.
Eleanor Douglas is the new girl in a new school in Omaha, Nebraska, and cannot avoid attention, no matter how hard she tries.

At first, Park does not like Eleanor either, just like everybody else. After some time, though, he catches her reading his comic book, and he realizes he has started to turn the pages slower.
The long and awkward silence between them is followed of long and lively conversations.
And the conversations are followed by love.

Eleanor comes from a crooked family. She has fallen asleep to the sounds of her second father yelling and her mother crying. Her family - five children and two adults - is so poor, they sleep not in a normal house but in a shack, if not. Toothbrushes are luxurious. All the five kids sleep in a cramped room. Such way of living has turned Eleanor in an introvert who will not let anybody see what is going on in her head. Not even Park.
But Park finds his ways to look inside Eleanor. And what he finds is one beautiful soul of one really beautiful girl.

“Eleanor was right. She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn't supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.”

Rainbow Rowell has managed to create a realistic description of the feelings only first love can raise. Holding someone's hand feels like holding a butterfly for a first time in your life, and you want everybody to meet your favorite person. You want to fall asleep with "I want you" in your ears.
Eleanor and Park is an amazing story with characters you can easily relate to. The plot is moving so fast, you end up reading the book for a couple of days. And the ending leaves you craving for more.

Wonder", R. J. Palacio

Meet Auggie. He's a ten-year old boy who likes Star Wars and ice cream; he rides his bike and has an Xbox. He does normal things but despite that, Auggie Pullman is not a normal boy. He suffers from a strange syndrome which has deformed his face.

"I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse."

Auggie has always been homeschooled but the real stress comes when he is made to go to a real one. It is difficult enough for other kids to adapt to middle school so can you imagine what it is for a child who has always been stared and laughed at?
Although the universe can give someone a bad lottery ticket, although your life being good or bad depends on pure luck, the universe takes care of its most fragile creations in ways we can’t see. like with parents who adore you blindly. and a big sister who feels guilty for being human over you.
"Wonder" is one of those books whose covers (or in my case, pdf files) you close with a sigh. It leaves you with lumps in your throat, your hands quiver while brushing the tears off your face. This book is heartbreaking and holds sad truths about life, and at the same time it makes you so happy, you want to hug every person out there. Because if you a boy like August Pullman can be brave enough to handle all the surgeries, prejudices, and bitternes of life, so can you. And if Auggie Pullman can survive middle school, everybody can.

“Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.”

Daughter of Smoke and Bone" by Laini Taylor

***

I wanted to come up with a super intriguing title but I couldn't come up with anything. Let it be just the name of the trilogy, right? The title itself is magical enough either way.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (or DOSAB) is Laini Taylor's best-selling trilogy, usually labeled as a YA urban fantasy but I'd say it's a very strong mix between urban and high fantasy.

The story is set in Prague, 21st century, nothing exiting...
...Despite Karou, our main character. Her hair is naturally blue, azure, to be more certain. She has weird tattoos on her palms and doesn't know anything about them. Actually, she doesn't know anything about herself. Who is she?

She had been innocent once, a little girl playing with feathers on the floor of a devil's lair. She wasn't innocent now, but she didn't know what to do about it.

But despite her being a total gaga, she is an artist and studies Art in Prague with her best friend and classmate Zuzana (read more about her here.) All her drawings show amazing creatures which she talks about as if they are real, although other people don't believe her. Creatures like Issa - a woman with a human torso and a snake tail instead of legs; or Yasri - she has curly orange hair, human-eyed and a parrot beak. The most amazing character, though, is Brimstone, and he is the most difficult for to describe and imagine. There is something about rams, about bears, I think lion traits were mentioned too.
Brimstone has a small shop. What is interesting about it: the teeth. Yes, he sells teeth. Don't let the teeth bother you, the story behind them will surprise you. And oh, what teeth create... NEVERMIND, It's a spoiler. And Karou "works" for him by giving teeth and sometimes jewellery or gems to poachers. To reach them, she has to walk through gates (more like doors.)
But one day somebody starts leaving burnt marks on the doors, and that's when everything goes cRAZY.

Start reading.
Enjoy the descriptions (while reading only the first paragraph of this exciting story, you can so vividly imagine the snowy, paved streets, the steam rising from Karou's coffee, Prague being foggy and mystical.)
And then enjoy the pain, cry your heart out until you reach the final sentence. Then you will crave for more and more.

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.

It did not end well.”

What Laini Taylor has created, is an unforgettable world full of relatable characters, fine humour, chocolate, cake, chocolate cake, interesting cultures&cultural references, unbelievably detailed history, beautiful races, a lot of sarcasm and stupid jokes, and last but not least: love. Tons of love. At first magical, but then painful and heartbreaking. At the end, though, there is always hope for something better.
(and there are women-warriors, that's super cool!)

What is the vocabulary of a person in love? 'The Lover's Dictionary', David Levithan

love, n.
I'm not going to even try.

An actual small dictionary describing the different stages of love with (mostly) uncommon, beautiful words. This book represents the story of a couple who met on an online dating site. Something neither of them does.
Everything started well. Laughing. jokes. common things - like their love for The Charlotte's Web; even the sex was good either in a rent-a-car place or on the floor. What is so good about sex on the floor? The narrator says you don't even feel the floor.

alfresco, adv.
...You fell quiet, gestured for me to listen. The sound of the
woods, the feel of the air. The wine settling in my thoughts.
The sky, so present. And you, watching me take it all in.
Naked to the world. The world, naked to us.

I'm not going to quote the whole book. At least going to try. It is too hard. I read Will Grayson, Will Grayson last year which is co-written by David Levithan and I enjoyed his parts more than John Green's. Levithan is really good with words and his writing style is absolutely perfect.
By heart, I will always love romantic books and not only classic romantic novels but also young adult. And while fangirling with my mom about 'Wuthering Heights' which she just reread and with which she completely fell in love, I was drowning in a contemporary romantic world. And I liked it. I stopped being so judgemental about young adult books and I like it.
This isn't a great read for St. Valentine's - it is a little depressing. But it shows love at its real form - funny, awkward, difficult, a little dramatic, a little sad, a little happy and cute. And if two people are destined to be together, they will fit - just like California and Nevada.

'Night of Cake and Puppets', Laini Taylor

I mentioned that book in my TBR pile for 2015 but I couldn't resist on reading it. This is about cute, teen love and maybe you won't expect much but Laini Taylor has written word porn. WORD PORN, I tell you.
Night of Cake and Puppets is a spin-off of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy which means it's not necessary to have read the other books. Everything you need to know is exposed in the first chapter.
Zuzana is Carou's best friend. She is a 4'8'' person but is vengeful for the whole planet, mostly because of her bigger brother Tomas. She has a twisted mind and her Deda used to tell her creepy bedtime stories when she was a child.

Truly, if I ever turn out to be a murderer or something, the newspapers can pretty much say, She didn’t have a chance to be normal. Her family twisted her from the day she was born.

Also, something less creepy and more innocent, she is a puppet-maker. A puppet-maker, fallen in love. What Zuze knows about him is:
  1. His name is Mik.
  2. He plays violin in the same theater she makes puppets for.
Mik, happily, knows more about her. (Yes, the story has two points of view, thank you, Laini!) He knows WHOLE FOUR THINGS! Well, three. The fourth is a quality. But at least he knows about her love for cake. If someone had a secret crush on me, I'd love him to know about my love for chocolate, and, yeah, cake, I lovelovelove cake. You don't know how sad I felt when Zuze had cake. Chocolate cake. Much tears, very wow, I want cake.
Whatever.
This is when the magic happens.
Scoopies are what Carou has - little beads, everyone with a unique pattern, and they make wishes come true. Simple, super small wishes, but Zuzana is satisfied. Scoopies are enough for her to... Well, read the goddamn book and find out what she does with her five scoopies. It is cute. It is magical. It is what I needed those days.
I needed something like that right then - I had more Christmas spirit in November rather than now, and my Christmas wasn't much Christmas-y at all. I didn't have a Christmas tree, only two garlands and three meters of Christmas lights in my room, that's it. I didn't know what magic was and I had lost my excitement.
Until I read that book.
For a reader, books are the little magic everyone wants, hopes for and or needs. And if you don't believe me, read Night of Cake and Puppets.

Life doesn’t need magic to be
magical.
(But a little bit sure doesn’t hurt.)
