Daughter of Smoke and Bone" by Laini Taylor

***

I wanted to come up with a super intriguing title but I couldn't come up with anything. Let it be just the name of the trilogy, right? The title itself is magical enough either way.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (or DOSAB) is Laini Taylor's best-selling trilogy, usually labeled as a YA urban fantasy but I'd say it's a very strong mix between urban and high fantasy.

The story is set in Prague, 21st century, nothing exiting...
...Despite Karou, our main character. Her hair is naturally blue, azure, to be more certain. She has weird tattoos on her palms and doesn't know anything about them. Actually, she doesn't know anything about herself. Who is she?

She had been innocent once, a little girl playing with feathers on the floor of a devil's lair. She wasn't innocent now, but she didn't know what to do about it.

But despite her being a total gaga, she is an artist and studies Art in Prague with her best friend and classmate Zuzana (read more about her here.) All her drawings show amazing creatures which she talks about as if they are real, although other people don't believe her. Creatures like Issa - a woman with a human torso and a snake tail instead of legs; or Yasri - she has curly orange hair, human-eyed and a parrot beak. The most amazing character, though, is Brimstone, and he is the most difficult for to describe and imagine. There is something about rams, about bears, I think lion traits were mentioned too.
Brimstone has a small shop. What is interesting about it: the teeth. Yes, he sells teeth. Don't let the teeth bother you, the story behind them will surprise you. And oh, what teeth create... NEVERMIND, It's a spoiler. And Karou "works" for him by giving teeth and sometimes jewellery or gems to poachers. To reach them, she has to walk through gates (more like doors.)
But one day somebody starts leaving burnt marks on the doors, and that's when everything goes cRAZY.

Start reading.
Enjoy the descriptions (while reading only the first paragraph of this exciting story, you can so vividly imagine the snowy, paved streets, the steam rising from Karou's coffee, Prague being foggy and mystical.)
And then enjoy the pain, cry your heart out until you reach the final sentence. Then you will crave for more and more.

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.

It did not end well.”

What Laini Taylor has created, is an unforgettable world full of relatable characters, fine humour, chocolate, cake, chocolate cake, interesting cultures&cultural references, unbelievably detailed history, beautiful races, a lot of sarcasm and stupid jokes, and last but not least: love. Tons of love. At first magical, but then painful and heartbreaking. At the end, though, there is always hope for something better.
(and there are women-warriors, that's super cool!)

'Night of Cake and Puppets', Laini Taylor

I mentioned that book in my TBR pile for 2015 but I couldn't resist on reading it. This is about cute, teen love and maybe you won't expect much but Laini Taylor has written word porn. WORD PORN, I tell you.
Night of Cake and Puppets is a spin-off of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy which means it's not necessary to have read the other books. Everything you need to know is exposed in the first chapter.
Zuzana is Carou's best friend. She is a 4'8'' person but is vengeful for the whole planet, mostly because of her bigger brother Tomas. She has a twisted mind and her Deda used to tell her creepy bedtime stories when she was a child.

Truly, if I ever turn out to be a murderer or something, the newspapers can pretty much say, She didn’t have a chance to be normal. Her family twisted her from the day she was born.

Also, something less creepy and more innocent, she is a puppet-maker. A puppet-maker, fallen in love. What Zuze knows about him is:
  1. His name is Mik.
  2. He plays violin in the same theater she makes puppets for.
Mik, happily, knows more about her. (Yes, the story has two points of view, thank you, Laini!) He knows WHOLE FOUR THINGS! Well, three. The fourth is a quality. But at least he knows about her love for cake. If someone had a secret crush on me, I'd love him to know about my love for chocolate, and, yeah, cake, I lovelovelove cake. You don't know how sad I felt when Zuze had cake. Chocolate cake. Much tears, very wow, I want cake.
Whatever.
This is when the magic happens.
Scoopies are what Carou has - little beads, everyone with a unique pattern, and they make wishes come true. Simple, super small wishes, but Zuzana is satisfied. Scoopies are enough for her to... Well, read the goddamn book and find out what she does with her five scoopies. It is cute. It is magical. It is what I needed those days.
I needed something like that right then - I had more Christmas spirit in November rather than now, and my Christmas wasn't much Christmas-y at all. I didn't have a Christmas tree, only two garlands and three meters of Christmas lights in my room, that's it. I didn't know what magic was and I had lost my excitement.
Until I read that book.
For a reader, books are the little magic everyone wants, hopes for and or needs. And if you don't believe me, read Night of Cake and Puppets

Life doesn’t need magic to be
magical.
(But a little bit sure doesn’t hurt.)
